Paradigm's Monitor 9 Series 7 system earns S+V's "Certified & Recommended" Stamp of Approval along with a 9.7/10 Stellar Review!

Daniel Kumin of Sound + Vision reviewed a pair of Monitor 9 floorstanding speakers, Center 3 and a pair of Surround 3 speakers all from the Monitor Series 7 lineup matched with DSP-3200 subwoofer and gave it the "Certified & Recommended" stamp of approval.

Robert Silva of About.com first saw the new Cinema 100 CT in our booth at CEDIA 2011 and took an immediate interest in the new products. He asked us to send him a system to test and so we did. Now, Robert has published his review and we are just as happy as Robert with the end result. Here's a few highlights...

Performance
"How a speaker system sounds is the most important consideration, and with that in mind, the Paradigm Cinema 100 CT Home Theater Speaker System did not disappoint... Clean, undistorted, sound was delivered across a wide frequency range and dispersed widely into the room. When sound was intended to be immersive it was. When precise direction and location accuracy was important it was."

"I found the powered subwoofer to be an excellent match for the rest of the speakers. With its 8-inch front facing driver and dual rear ports, the subwoofer provided very good lower frequency response. The bass response was fairly tight and complemented both music and movie tracks appropriately, providing good bass effect, without unnecessary boominess."

Overall
"The Paradigm Cinema 100 CT is a great example of well-styled and engineered speaker system, that delivers great sound for reasonable price... and even includes inclusion of both the table mounts and wall mounting hardware, making the Cinema 100 CT a great value. If you are shopping for a compact speaker system for a modestly powered setup in a small or medium-size room, you definitely have to give the 100 CT a listen."

Attendance was up at CES 2012 and so was the Volume at the Paradigm & Anthem Suites

CES 2012 wrapped up last week and based on attendance and show coverage, we're calling it a great success at Paradigm & Anthem! With the introduction of new products, a mind-blowing 2-channel high-end demo as well as a few sneak previews of upcoming products, the Paradigm & Anthem suites at the Venetian were buzzing with excitement! So let's recap on what's new...

Paradigm introduced three lines of Designer Series in-ceiling speaker including all new thin-bezel aesthetics and acoustic enhancements across the AMS, SA and SIG lines. All models are now shipping!

As was the case at CEDIA 2011, the Paradigm SHIFT listening bar was rocking at CES. Along with existing Paradigm SHIFT products on demo (the A2 powered speakers and three earbuds) we also introduced two new accessories. The BD 1 universal bluetooth dongle allows you to stream music from any bluetooth enabled device to your A2 powered speakers. Also, new Sport Ear Hooks were on display for use with all three Paradigm SHIFT earbuds. Both accessories will be available soon.

Also new from Paradigm SHIFT and sitting off to the side of the listening bar was a static early stage prototype that we couldn't help but gloat about... a 2.1 Soundbar and Subwoofer coming this summer to the Paradigm SHIFT lineup. It was very well received by all that came by for a peek, so we are very excited to launch the real deal later this year.

Lastly was Paradigm & Anthem's simple but stunning 2-channel high-end demo featuring two Signature S8 floorstanding speakers driven by a pair of new Anthem Statement M1 1000W monaural amplifiers. The demo room was one of great admiration by attendees, leaving many walking out in total disbelief!

Paradigm Reference MilleniaOne Speaker System Named Sound + Vision's 2011 "Product of the Year"

In March 2011 Brent Butterworth of Sound + Vision reviewed the Paradigm Reference MilleniaOne speaker system and wrote a smashing review to say the least.

Brent named it "One of the best speaker systems I have reviewed" and gave it a rating of 9.7/10. Awesome. We were flattered, to say the least, but nobody at Paradigm expected what happened next... The MilleniaOne not only made a cameo on the January 2012 cover of Sound + Vision (see below and on a news stand near you), it was also named 2011 "Product of the Year"!

Product of the Year... PRODUCT OF THE YEAR... as in THE BEST PRODUCT of THE YEAR in ALL CATEGORIES of A/V! WOW!! Forgive us for being overly enthusiastic but this is HUGE!

At CES 2012, Sound + Vision's Editor-in-Chief, Mike Mettler, presented Paradigm with the award and took video footage of the award acceptance by our very own Mark Aling, Senior Marketing Director (see right).

"...A really nice combination of bass extension, power & control." - The Perfect Vision on the Monitor 11 Series 7 Speaker System

After getting a tour of the Paradigm and Anthem CEDIA booth this past September, Chris Martens of The Perfect Vision was eager to test out the new Monitor Series 7 speakers. The new Monitor subwoofers weren't quite ready to launch so instead of a 5.1 system we sent Chris a pair of Monitor 11's, Center 3 and a pair of Surround 3's for review, knowing quite well that (although not preferred) the Monitor 11's were capable of some serious bass, even without the help of one of the new Monitor subs.

After taking some time to put them to the test, Chris published his review online. Here are some quotes to give you a taste of his thoughts...

"What exactly makes the Monitor Series 7 lineup special? The simplest and most accurate answer would be to say that, just a few years back, today’s new Monitor Series 7 models could easily have passed for earlier-generation Studio speakers."

"Right from outset, I was struck by both the smoothness and subtlety of the Monitor-series front channel speakers...Paradigm has seen fit to equip both its Monitor 11 floorstanders and Monitor Center 3 speaker with real, dedicated midrange drivers—not with compromise mid-bass drivers as would more commonly be seen in speakers in this price class."

"Paradigm is able to give the Monitor 11s and Center 3 a sound that is unexpectedly agile, nuanced, and refined. In truth, if I heard these speakers in the dark and was told they were Paradigm Studio models, I would probably find the assertion believable."

"Part of what makes the Monitor speakers so unfussy is that they are relatively sensitive and easy to drive. As a result, the speakers deliver an expansive and lively sound with dynamics that can be—where appropriate—downright explosive... the Monitors effortlessly “breathe” and flow with the action... they rarely if ever sound strained or compressed."

"...the Monitor 11s offer a really nice combination of bass extension, power and control... you can build a perfectly satisfying Monitor 11-based surround system without feeling any real need to add a subwoofer."

"... the Monitors... are willing to play louder than most homeowners would probably think wise, meaning they offer noticeably greater dynamic headroom than some of their competitors."

"Good though the Monitor system is for movie playback, I think it does even better with music material...Overall, I found that the Monitor’s presentation... very smooth and pleasingly organic-sounding... sound that makes the system satisfying to listen to—even when powered by modest electronics."

"The Monitors catch the soaring, dreamy quality of the mix, thanks in part to surround imaging that is spectacular."

"I found the Monitors could easily show difference between source components—not something all affordable priced surround systems could do as effectively as the Monitor system did."

SoundStage! names Paradigm Signature SUB 2: "Recommended Reference Component"

When Jeff Fritz of SoundStage! reviewed the Paradigm Reference Signature SUB 2 in 2009 he immediately gave it the "Reviewers’ Choice" award. Then at CES 2010 it was given a 2009 SoundStage! Network Product of the Year award in the category of "Pioneering Design Achievement". Now nearly two years later the SUB 2 has been awarded with "Recommended Reference Component" status.

"Specs aside, what matters is how the Sub 2 performs with music. When Jeff Fritz reviewed the Sub 2 in October 2009, he not only put its performance on a par with that of the JLA Gotham g213, he gave the nod to the Sub 2 for its substantially lower price. AVForums reviewed the Paradigm Reference MilleniaOne 5.0 speaker system paired with the MilleniaSub subwoofer and gave it their "Highly Recommended" stamp of approval. Read on for some great quotes...

Paradigm Reference Technology
"The Reference Series tech shines through with an enormously refined and detailed presentation, free of any undue emphasis of any part of the frequency range."

"Indeed, as you'd hope, the tiny cabinets are razor sharp at image placement. In stereo listening, the central vocals are etched in the centre of the soundstage, with no sense of the other performers, or instruments, being bound to the speakers".

High-Frequencies
Treble is very sweet indeed and remains so at high volumes, be that with music or movies. From natural sibilants on speech and vocals, to the sheen of a brushed cymbal or bullet casing, the S-PAL tweeter never breaks into sounding edgy or hard. This is natural detail and it makes for an easy listen over long periods".

Midrange
"It is well matched to the midrange, which is uncommonly open and expressive. Again, it's clear that the mid/bass driver is a quality item, giving away nothing but size. In a small, extremely rigid and inert enclosure, this delivers very low colouration that conveys clear, intelligible and expressive speech and vocals, without muddle".

Multi-channel
"Turning to multichannel and movies in particular, the synergy of five identical speakers is hard to beat and when it's one that images as well as the MilleniaOnes, you're laughing. The precision and coherence with which sounds transition across and around the sound-sphere is superb..."

Bass
"All of this is underpinned by the MilleniaSub, delivering the lows in a taught, tuneful fashion, down into the mid 20Hz region. This is in no small part due to the Perfect Bass Kit, tuning the room boom excesses out of the equation. The target response curve PBK tries to hit, also gently rises with descending frequency, which gives a very muscular balance to the sound, that remains potent at low levels. This, coupled with just the right amount of top end sparkle, gives the complete package a full sized warmth that is unusual in a sub/sat package".

"If you really must hide your subwoofer, there are few as potentially covert subs as this I can think of at the price or, and this is the crucial bit, still qualify as a real subwoofer".

Conclusion
"These are classy little satellites. Combined with the MilleniaSub, it's perfectly possible to talk about the presentation in terms of full sized loudspeakers, such is the cohesiveness. In fact, they do some things better..."

Geoffrey Morrison of Sound + Vision recently jumped on a jet and flew across North America to visit us so that he could take a spin of our state-of-the art manufacturing facility here in Mississauga, Ontario. Here are a few photos and words about his trip...

"...in a nondescript building in an nondescript office park that could truly have been located anywhere in the world, Paradigm speakers and subwoofers, Anthem electronics and amps, and even MartinLogan electrostats are manufactured."

"In an interesting twist, they've started to move some manufacturing back from China to their Toronto-adjacent facility. "Vertically integrated" may be a buzzword these days, but in this case, it's true. Paradigm does nearly everything in-house for most models."

"I came away right impressed with Paradigm. Their speakers had always impressed me, but to see how much care and effort goes into them was eye opening. Paradigm & Anthem Proud to Take Part in Extreme Makeover Home Edition Keefer Family Project

When a gymnastics accident left teenager Brian Keefer paralyzed from the neck down, his father Steve quit his job to dedicate the entirety of his time to his son’s recovery, including escorting him to college day-to-day. However, given the layout of the Keefer family’s home, it became somewhat of a prison for Brian because he was confined to the main floor - but not for long...

The Extreme Makeover Home Edition team redesigned and built the home salvaging only a few key rooms of the old home, while designing an entirely new wing specifically for Brian, complete with a voice activated home automation system, a monitoring system and an aqua therapy pool on the flip-side of the motorized Draper screen that has become Brian’s new home theater.

And what better opportunity for Paradigm & Anthem to take part in this incredible project, then with the inclusion of a theater room? As soon as the opportunity presented itself we were quick to jump on board and donate an array of speakers and electronics to the Extreme team. In the theater room and throughout the home there are a total of twelve PCS and CS series in-wall speakers, two Reference Millenia 20 on-wall LCR speakers, an X-300 in-wall amplifier, Stylus and Rock Monitor outdoor speakers. From Anthem the speakers are powered with an MRX-300 receiver and a PVA 4 amplifier.

CEDIA EXPO 2011 - A Raging Success and a whole lotta fun for Paradigm & Anthem!

It would be impossible to say that CEDIA 2011 was anything but a success for Paradigm & Anthem. With the introduction of many products (and product lines!) three active demos and sneak previews of multiple unreleased products, the booth was buzzing with excitement and the mass amounts of show coverage by the press is proof of that.

Paradigm introduced the all new Monitor Series 7 speaker line and showed off their acoustic muscle in a 7.4 demo for hundreds of show attendees. Also highlighted was the Millenia LP low-profile on-wall L/C/R, which hung proudly snug to the wall ...

Paradigm also provided a sneak preview of the upcoming Monitor Series subwoofers flaunting wireless and PBK capability and thin-bezel Designer Series in-walls.

Anthem introduced the state-of-the-art Statement M1 amplifier. Boasting 1 kilowatt into 8 ohms and only 1 rack unit in height, this powerhouse is the most powerful, slender and best-value amplifier on the market! Anthem also previewed the upcoming AVM 50v 3D and D2v 3D preamplifier/processors.

Also at the booth was the first ever listening bar from Paradigm SHIFT. With all three earbuds (E1, E2m, E3m hooked up to iPad stations and the A2 powered speakers pumping tunes straight from a mixdeck, visitors tapped their feet and bobbed their heads while indulging in good quality audio catered to their individual musical preference.

After being totally blown away (almost literally) by the SUB 2, Adam Rayner of Techradar.com came back for more, but this time it was to test out the SUB 2's "baby brother", none other than the Paradigm Reference Signature SUB 1. Calling it the "cute clone of the Hexagonal Hell that its big brother embodies" Adam was impressed by baby brother's capabilities. Here are some highlights...

"The resulting performance was amazing. It was as if an audio expert with a real-time analyzer and some serious time had hand-tuned the entire room. Knowing fully just how wonderful these little tykes can perform, we agreed and shipped him the gear. "When I fired the system up... these qualities came through in spades. The soundstage of the S2s was very wide, but most notably was very deep. Much of the music seemed to radiate from beyond the back wall, really bringing the depth of the stage that it was recorded on back to your listening environment. The picking of a guitar came through with the metallic notes of the strings coming across, but it was a very easy sound to my ear. In person, the sound of someone picking a guitar is usually not something that would cause you to wince, but with many tweeters you can find that those higher notes will have a glare to them that is very fatiguing. The Beryllium tweeters were very detailed, but still smooth and very relaxing to listen to..."

Under the hood of the amplifier

"Unpacked, this monster weighs in at almost 43 lbs. and a peek under the hood lets you quickly see why. A good-sized toroidal transformer is inside, along with two massive Nichicon filter capacitors in the middle of the board. Two massive heatsinks, one per channel, are visible through cut-outs in the bottom of the chassis which add to the weight, but also allow it to run without any fans to dissipate heat and interfere with the music."

On the Bench: The S2 & Integrated 225

"The Paradigm/Anthem combo presented a wonderful window into the recording studio. Though originally mastered digitally at 24/96 before the transfer to vinyl, there was exceptional clarity to the recording and the attributes that I had come to love with this setup really shone through again. The soundstage was wider than the speakers and again extended well beyond the rear wall in depth. The musicians and their instruments had their own clear space on the recording... The sense of being next to the studio while they recorded was brought home to my basement. I sat back to enjoy the show, only getting up from my seat to flip the record."

"The weeks that I had the Paradigm and Anthem setup in my listening room were nothing less than a joy. While many people would scoff when you might say that close to $4,000 for a set of speakers and an integrated amp is a bargain, when a setup like this can provide so much enjoyment and remove the desire to need to upgrade anytime soon, I really feel that it can be classified that way... you have an incredibly high quality system that will bring you joy for years to come."

"230 Pounds of Pure, Pulverizing Home Theater Excitement... I’ve Never Heard a Sub that Approaches the Performance of the SUB 2" - Shane Buettner, Home Theater Magazine

Shane Buettner, previous editor of Home Theater magazine, begged to review the SUB 2 after an "extraordinary" demo experience in the Paradigm & Anthem demo room at CES 2010 calling it "the best home theater demo at CES 2010".

"The bass was sensational, thunderous, and room shaking, and yet it was strikingly refined. That was the first time I saw the SUB 2, a 4,500-watt subwoofer (rated RMS, and never mind if you can actually get that out of your wall), with six 10-inch woofers arrayed in pairs, firing out of three sides of the cabinet. You read that right. I was every bit as awestruck as you probably are now. Why would Paradigm design and build such a thing? Because they can. In home theater and in life, it’s my firm belief that anything worth doing is worth overdoing. If that’s your philosophy too, read on, because the SUB 2 is a helluva ride."

And so, after leaving the demo room wide-eyed, jaw-dropped and full of sheer joy, Shane beam-lined straight over to his good friend and industry colleague Mark Aling, Paradigm's Director of Marketing and begged for a chance to review one (or two) of the first production approved pieces.

Alas, we agreed to Shane's request and out of that came a thorough, well-written and extremely entertaining review. Below are a few of our favourite quotes, but if you haven't already picked up a copy of Home Theater's June 2011 issue, we hope you will Click here! and take the time to read the entirety....

Power & Measurements
"...the guys at Paradigm—with straight faces, I might add—claim the SUB 2 can deliver 4,500 watts (9,000 watts peak), but only if you and your electrician hook that sucker up to 240-volt service. I don’t have an electrician on call, so I had to live with a measly 3,000 watts (rated) continuous with my sissy-pants 120-volt service. Again, I’ll leave it to others to debate whether that much power can get out of my or anyone else’s walls to the sub, but here’s my tease on that: What I heard with my 120-volt service left me scared shitless to hear what this thing would sound like with 240 volts."

"...this sub’s –3-decibel point is a ludicrous 12 hertz. 12 freaking hertz! The measurements came with a note from audio technical editor Mark Peterson. We measure speakers in an automotive bay that we share with the car magazines in our parent company. The room is big enough to house at least a dozen automobiles, trucks, and SUVs and has a ceiling over 15 feet in height. When Mark ran the frequency sweeps, the SUB 2 rattled dust out of the rafters, something that hasn’t happened before or since".

Performance
"With the PBK on my side, plus Paradigm’s recommendation for corner placement, I felt confident I’d get great performance. Man, was I right. But the first thing I had to acknowledge was that I could no longer keep the doors in the back of the room (one to a walk-in closet I use for storing gear, the other to a bathroom) closed during movie nights. The SUB 2 would damn near shake them off their hinges if I didn’t leave them open."

"Perhaps more remarkable than the SUB 2’s brute strength is its sense of texture and detail. I had no idea what the hell was going on in those lower frequency ranges. There’s far more nuance in the low frequencies in modern movie soundtracks than I’d have ever believed."

"It was physically uncomfortable, but in a good way (I did maintain control of my bodily functions even though it was a struggle). The only aural confusion it created was that, at times, I couldn’t distinguish the movie soundtrack effects from my room and the rest of my house protesting against the immense pressure. I was ducking for cover during the early cannonades in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, and Cloverfield woke up my sleeping six-year-old."

"Another impressive feat is that, unlike a lot of big thud-pucker subs, you only hear this one when it’s called for. Working with the PBK in conjunction with ARC, I never heard it creep into male vocals or dialogue when I didn’t wish it to. It’s a surprisingly considerate houseguest in that respect. Until it gets loud, low, and intense, it simply does its job unnoticed, which is exactly what a subwoofer should do."

Conclusion
"I’ve never heard a sub that approaches the performance of the Paradigm Reference Signature SUB 2. This is 230 pounds of pure, pulverizing home theater excitement, and it earns my highest recommendation. Unlike other subs, you needn’t worry about whether your associated gear is up to the challenge. With this one, you need to be sure your house is structurally sound enough to withstand it. Why should you spend $9,000 on this behemoth of a powered subwoofer? Because you can."

"I started off by listening to An Organ Blaster from start to finish. Allow me to clarify, I started listening to An Organ Blaster and it sounded so blasted good that I let the entire disc play through...Half a second into the first track I knew I was in for a treat, there was something about the way the Paradigm speakers reproduced the organ that just felt more real."

"Exaggeration aside, comparing what I had heard listening to the same music before, I felt as if I was comparing listening in a concert hall to listening inside a closet... Nothing I had heard to that point in my home sounded remotely as good as the Paradigm Signatures, and I could not get enough of them."

"Thanks to the SUB 1 suddenly I could enjoy the same assault on my senses in the comfort of my own home! The sealed monster that is the SUB 1 hits harder than any sub I have owned, and it does so with an agility and punch to the sound that is extremely satisfying. While I was quite sure I had heard tight, un-bloated bass before the SUB 1 forced me to reevaluate that opinion as it continued to show up every sub I had heard before in my life. "If I'm not careful in this section I'll go on for a week, so allow me to cut to the chase and give you the facts...It was awesome! While the fidelity and imaging of these speakers is more noticeable when listening to music, it adds realism and immerses you in a way that is hard to describe."

"You've already heard me speak to the merits of the SUB 1 so I won't wax poetic about it much longer here save to say that every film I watched on this system made me feel more and more impressed with the SUB 1's performance. With such a great sub anchoring the sound, the mains themselves sounded better...The mains did an awesome job of throwing a massive wall of sound my way and repeatedly impressed me."

"While my surrounds produced atmospherics quite well, the ADP surrounds were in another league entirely. Whether it was wind whistling past or the thrum of warp engines, suddenly surround content had far more weight and realism to it."

Alas, Dave's Final Thoughts...
"Paradigm's generous review loan has answered a longstanding set of questions for me. What does seventeen grand sound like? If you asked me that question prior to the arrival of Paradigm's S6 based review system, I would have probably said a waste of money. After several weeks of painstaking tweaking, listening, agonizing and enjoyment I started to find myself understanding the question a bit better. What value did I place on hearing things I had never heard before in my tired old recordings? How much was it worth to have friends come over and spend two hours with a massive grin on their faces as the Paradigm's did their job with whatever film we had chosen? Finally, what was it worth to have my wife repeatedly ask me to turn it up instead of down? Am I willing to spend that kind of money on audio gear? After hearing these speakers, the answer is a simple and emphatic, YES!"

"Tremendous low bass response, build quality ...and PBK is just icing on the cake" - John Gatski

John Gatski got his hands on our Paradigm Reference SUB 15 and put it to the Everything Audio Network test. Given that it earned the "Stellar Sound Award", we think it's safe to say we passed!

As a current owner of the Paradigm Reference Servo 15 (and big fan might we add), we were excited to hear what John had to say about it's successor. Here are a few highlights taken from John's review...

Impressive Bass Correction
"The PBK confirmed my room's fairly uniform... but the PBK compensation allowed correction of the low-bass diip to give me flat response from 20 Hz. Pretty slick!"

"With the PBK setup active, the SUB 15 could easily crank 100 dB at 20 Hz. (I had to wear ear protection during the measurements and all sorts of things in the house began to vibrate.)"

The Audition
Comparing the Servo 15 and SUB 15 side-by-side, John concluded that the SUB 15 demonstrates increased bass energy under 25 Hz, benefits of PBK compensation, more percussive impact, sonic effect as well as more quick and natural, cleaner, lower and perceptually louder bass especially between 20 and 30 Hz.

"The SUB 15's impact was tremendous with a five second subsonic blast of room vibration and pictures rattling on walls two floors away (according to my wife). Wow!"

"No lingering flabbiness like many ported subs I have tried. The acoustic suspension design helps keep it clean sounding."

The Verdict
"A great big Stellar Sound Award for this speaker; it is Everything Audio's new reference subwoofer"

"The better a speaker is, the dumber it will make you look" - Cory Potts on the MilleniaOne, MilleniaSub & PT-2 Wireless Transmitter

Cory Potts of Secrets of Home Theater reviewed the Paradigm Reference MilleniaOne speakers and MilleniaSub and concluded that this system has great value and neutral sound so convincing, it can make you look dumb! Read on for some of our favourite quotes from Cory's review...

Performance
"The first thing that strikes me about this system is this: nothing . . . at least not at first. In true Paradigm fashion these speakers, generally speaking, are fairly neutrally voiced with a smooth sound, though-laid back, that is very reminiscent of my own larger Studio 20s."

"The Millenia’s sound is very natural, laid-back yet realistic in the true spirit of Paradigm speakers. My family puts the 2 yr old twins to bed before watching TV and my wife can attest that there were numerous times where a baby crying in the background of a TV sitcom had us both sitting forward on the couch proving my theory that “the better a speaker is, the dumber it will make you look.”"

Value
"The value proposition is usually where high end speakers begin to come apart, but not Paradigm. Understand that in the realm of high end speakers it is a common occurrence to have to ante up twice (thrice?) as much money for a negligible difference. Compare these to any similar sized satellite speakers at the local big box store and I will be blown away if you can find anything that comes remotely close to this speaker for the money."

The Sub
"It may seem terribly obvious to some of you but one of the best ways to conceal where the bass is coming from is to conceal the speaker that it is coming from. Paradigm is onto this idea with the invention of a sub that is basically just a smidge larger than a PS3. The possibilities of hiding this are endless when paired with the (PT-2) wireless transmitter (just keep a line of site with the receiver). It could go behind a plant, under a couch, loveseat , recliner, coffee table, end table, inside decorative baskets, inside open entertainment centers, inside air handler return grills (I’m saving all the really creative ones for Paradigm’s “Hidden Sub” contest…if they ever have one.)"

"I also found out how musical this sub really was as it handled a great deal of soundtrack information below the 100 Hz mark"

Conclusion
"The intended audience for this system is very simple. Someone who desires high end sound without cashing in the kid’s college fund or taking up valuable floor space with refrigerator sized floor standing speakers. If you want to spend a little more and have a little more room, I can attest that Paradigm also has other equally attractive options. Paradigm’s claim for all of their speakers is that they provide “an audibly better product”, and when a barely audible difference is worth several magnitudes in price, an audibly better product is really all that matters. Bottom line though: For those on a budget and who have a small room, the Paradigm MilleniaOne's are "keepers". Add a subwoofer, and call me in the morning."

Paradigm makes Donation to Support Relief Efforts in Japan and the Asia Pacific Region

After a week of global media attention, the mention of the Japan earthquake and Asia Pacific tsunami is no surprise to anyone around the world. But what has very quickly escalated into a historical natural disaster, has and will continue to affect the entire world. Non-profit humanitarian agencies and governments internationally are reaching out but the destruction created as a result of such a crisis requires more than that.

Which is why we at Paradigm have decided to do what we can to help. Earlier today we donated $2,500 to the Canadian Red Cross and have reached out on our various social media sites encouraging our extended family (Facebook fans and Twitter followers) to consider donating money towards the relief efforts as well.

Voices were presented with the utmost clarity, accompanied by crisp highs and an accurate and impressively punchy lower end. At normal listening levels the sound was quite pleasing, reminding me several times of models higher up in the Paradigm hierarchy."

"I could hear not only the spatter of water hitting the ground, but could tell by the smacking sounds that the surface it was striking was one of marble or concrete, even though I couldn't see it. This kind of textured details was also present when I listened to the rake being dragged through the grass: I could hear the metallic tinniness of the rake's teeth, indicating that the grass was quite short, though I couldn't actually see the grass. It is these sorts of details that help paint a picture in the mind and add to a film's atmosphere. The entire SE system painted those pictures brilliantly."

"The sounds of trees cracking and crashing to the ground, of water splashing as Harding’s colleagues run upriver in search of her, and the deep thudding of the dinosaurs’ feet hitting the ground, were all presented with clarity and solidity, showcasing just how easily this system can portray subtle details during huge dynamic swings. The Paradigms were able to create a holistic soundstage filled with detail and nuance."

The SE 3s provided a larger-than-life soundstage of background music, gunshots, shell casings hitting the ground, and explosions. Russell Williams of AVForums.com in the UK reviewed the Paradigm Reference Signature SUB 1 and it blew him away - (almost) literally.

"Reference Status. There, I said it. You can't mark it down for being hard to move because so is my wife and I still keep her about. Like the wife, in just about every other respect, it's just so damn easy to live with. Whereas other subs may have you fiddling about with separate movie and music settings to bypass their deficiencies, you just plug the Sub 1 in, tune it once, put the microphones away and sit grinning like a nun who's found the soap; for hours on end."

All jokes aside, Williams then went on to say, "I never thought that movies needed a bit more bass or that music sounds a little bloated – It just did accurate bass, as loud or low as you could want, and then stopped exactly when it wasn't being asked to anymore. It never drew attention to itself in an unpleasant way; it turns itself on and off without missing the beginning of an effect; and looks gorgeous in any front room."

Paradigm & Anthem show off their Flagship Pieces in this Parisian themed Custom Home Theater

Award-winning Chicago Interior Designer John Cannon designed a home theater and entertainment zone with hints of an antique Parisian bar decorated with Art-Deco details. Incorporated in the 'zone' was a breathtaking home cinema with Paradigm & Anthem flagship installation by George Georgiou of Cinetec Audio Video Design Centers in Palos Hills, IL.

Georgiou chose to deck out the theater in the Paradigm Reference Signature line because as he puts it...

"Paradigm has, at every price point, a speaker that competes with the best of the best in the world... so when I'm deciding which speaker we're going to use in a particular room, I look at the capabilities of each speaker in [Paradigm's] catalog and decide what's going to eb best for the project depending on a budget. With this room, we needed world-class performance, and so we went with S8. I don't know that there's a better speaker for the money."

At the front of the room Georgiou used a pair of S8's and a C5 center channel. However, at the rear of the room, Georgiou wanted to match the S8 & C5 sonically but he couldn't use traditional in-walls in the curved wall. "As good as the guys at Paradigm are, they don't make curved back boxes," he says. But Georgiou found the perfect solution using four Signature W5 speakers, a thing on-wall speaker.

Also incorporated in the theater is Anthem Statement electronics including the award-winning D2v audio/video processor as well as P2 & P5 amplifiers. The curved rear wall also posed some serious acoustical challenges but Georgiou used ARC Anthem room correction kit included with the D2v to tame the sound field.

...But not only did the highs impress Mickelson... "This transition from tweeter to midrange was handled well, the two drivers sounding like one. This is vital to suspending disbelief, a poor transition or sonically mismatched drivers ruining any possibility of achieving realism, at least for me."

"There is a great deal to admire about Paradigm's best-of-the-best effort, including dazzling treble region, thanks to one special tweeter, a well-integrated midrange, and nimble, deep bass. Diligently set up, these speakers convey space, including height information, better than most and better than some that cost many times their price, and they transport you into the unique sonic world of each recording in an exhilarating way."

"I've yet to hear a sub-$10,000 speaker that's better than the S8 v3, and I've heard many, many that are far more expensive and not nearly as accomplished in both general and specific ways. In fact, the quality of the music-making and the reasonable price of Signature S8 v3 render some of its more expensive and esoteric competition irrelevant."

Half the Price or Less: Paradigm Signature S2 Competes with the Best!

On February 1st Jeff Fritz of Ultra Audio wrote an opinion piece called "How Close Can I Get for Half the Price or Less?" in response to a common misconception in the audiophile world that the more you spend, the better the gear.

"Audiophiles will sometimes spend what they feel they must spend because they assume that, in high-end audio, the ratio of price to performance is a linear one. But if your breadth of experience is broad enough, you'll surely have learned that spending more doesn't always buy more performance.", said Fritz.

"I often see audiophiles decide how much they're going to spend on a stereo component before they've even considered what they need to spend to meet their goals. The problem with this predetermined approach is one of a lack of context: The shoppers simply can't determine relative value without a more informed knowledge of what's available", he continued.

And so, Fritz decided to take it upon himself to answer his own question, just how close to the best could he get for half the price or less? His goal - $10,000/pair maximum. And so he went to work...

On March 1st, just 28 days later, Jeff published his results. And what brand did he choose to put to the test? None other than Paradigm! More specifically the Paradigm Reference Signature S2 v.3's in Piano Black at $2898/pair, (well under the $10,000/pair mark!), couple with our new ground-breaking bass pumper, the Paradigm Reference Signature SUB 2.

And what were the results? Check out a few statements from Jeff's review...

Highs

"The Reference Signature S2 v.3 could compete in the highs with virtually anything I've heard at any price. It was neutral and extended, clean and precise, without being harsh or brittle. And I threw some hard tests at it."

Lows

"The bottom line is that Paradigm has optimized the drivers in the S2 v.3 for the clean, loud and linear reproduction of sound. When you have the resources of a Paradigm, in terms of both technical talent and manufacturing efiiciency and capability, you have some strong advantages. The drivers in the S2 v.3, it seems to me, would be right at home in products costing many times as much."

Conclusion

"There's no doubt that a system like the Paradigm Reference Signature S2 v.3 and Sub 2 can compete with many speakers costing twice or thrice as much -- or more. It will have the frequency extension in both the highs and lows to match any of them. It also can make magic between those frequency extremes that will compete with almost all, and destroy many, speakers with price tags dearer than ten grand. In fact, around the Paradigm's price range, I don't know of a better alternative. The best speakers I've review that compete price-wise, such as Thiel's CS2.4SE, just don't have the ability to reproduce large-scale music with the sheer oomph of this Paradigm pairing. Even speakers with such excellent pedigrees as the WIlson Audio Specialties WATT/Puppy 8 and the YG Acoustics Kipod, both of which I've very positively reviewed, don't pay as low'n'loud as the Paradigm combo, nor do they outpace the S2 v.3s in the super-high frequencies. The Paradigms compete commendably with products that they would not usually be compared with in a retail store."

First Listen continued! Chris Martens of AVguide finishes his review of the SE Series

On January 28th we blogged about Chris Martens and his exciting "First Listen" piece on the SE Series in The Perfect Vision... Well, Chris published his review of the oh so popular lifestyle series from Paradigm and it sounds to us like his last listen was as good as the first!

Appropriately titled "Greater Than the Sum of its Parts", Martens review of the SE system was comprehensive. Chris placed emphasis on the dollar value as well as the aptitude of the midrange. But more importantly, the SE Series was stamped recommended products of 2010!

"Another strength involves the Special Editions' ability to produce very large soundstages and to create tightly focused sonic images within those stages-images that effortlessly break free from the speaker enclosures to fill the room with sound. In fact, in terms of three-dimensionality, imaging, and soundstaging, the Special Editions are one of Paradigm's better efforts to date", said Martens who had an array of positive things to say about his system.

Chris summarized his opinion by stating "... this system offers delightful sound quality at a very accessible price, while offering visually pleasing cabinetry that hits that "just right" size ..."

Chris Martens of AVguide.com opened the boxes of his SE System and listened to them for the first time. Here's what he had to say...

"Personally I've tried to address the what-you-want vs. what-you-can-afford gulf by becoming a specialist, of sorts, in overachieving, high-value, high performance components and in that vein one of my favorite go-to resources is the Canadian speaker manufacturer Paradigm. Those guys are, in my view, experts at speaking the language of A/V value. A perfect case in point would be the Paradigm Special Edition series speakers that The Perfect Vision recently received for review."

He then went as far as to say "I was wowed to hear (even on limited surround channel information) how full and rich the SE 1s seemed to be. Paradigm's Mini Monitor wins "Entry-Level Loudspeaker of the Year" for 2009 from The Absolute Sound while also receiving a rave review from Steven Stone!

A great review, Steven starts off by saying... "If I had a dollar for every time a young person said to me, "I need an inexpensive speaker that doesn't suck," I'd have enough money to buy all my under-20-year-old nieces and nephews Paradigm Mini Monitors. Secrets of Home Theater Reviews a Millenia HT system!

Dennis Berger of Home Entertainment reviews the Paradigm Reference Sub 12. "Honestly, it’s hard to do anything but gush about the SUB 12. On its own, it’s a fantastic subwoofer—rich and nuanced, with a perfect voice for music and more than enough power for movies. Throw in the Perfect Bass Kit (or ARC-1 if you have an Anthem processor), and quite frankly one of the best 12-inch subs I’ve heard in its class is elevated into another category altogether."

Paradigm Reference Earns "Showstopper" Status from Soundstage!

It wasn’t that many years ago that Paradigm made only conventional-looking speakers and subwoofers in rectangular boxes at prices low enough that most people could afford them. For a very long time, they were known for products that provided great value but didn’t necessarily represent the state of the art.

Though still a leader on the budget side, in recent years Paradigm has gone upscale to challenge the best there is, and there’s no better evidence of that than their new Reference Signature Sub 2 (front left) and Reference Signature Sub 1 powered subwoofers. These aren’t like the Paradigms of yesteryear, and the company knows it. Their product literature boldly proclaims: "Our most ambitious subwoofer to date . . . loaded with cutting-edge technology!"
